I want to use the backflip for texting, no data plan

Sunday 09th of May 2010 / android.net
I am 13 and looking for a phone. My favorite so far is definitely the Backflip. I really want a texting phone, but love the extra apps and stuff provided by smartphones such as the backflip. I want to be able to use the backflip as a texting phone while I'm out and about and as a smart phone when I'm at home. So I want to be able to turn off the data plan, so that I recieve absolutely 0 data. When I am at home or at a free-wifi restaraunt I would like to be able to activate wifi and use the phone to browse the web, check email, etc... Is it possible to turn off the data plan like that. Will it be possible to still have all the internet using apps/widgets and not have them automatically collect data while I am not connected to wifi?

Viber Out of Beta; Brings Free VoIP and Texting to Android

Wednesday 20th of July 2011 / android.net
The Viber VoIP and Texting app for Android is out of beta, and the full version is still free! The app basically allows you to use your 3G or WiFI connection for phone calls and texting, thereby saving your regular minutes. The primary advantage of this app is that it would allow you to make free international calls. Obviously, the person on the other end would also need to have the software on their phone. Viber is different than most VoIP services because it doesn’t require registration, and actually uses your own phone number. The app is also ad-free for now! It's available on the Market.Source: AndroidCommunity

Metro PCS Joyn App allows WiFi calling. Thoughts?

Thursday 31st of January 2013 / androidforums.com
So i downloaded the app, works AWESOME for WiFi calling, its easy on the battery when running in the background (which is an enormous plus), and allows video chatting as well (with other people using the Joyn app).My only gripe with this as it sits is no WiFi texting, which is a big deal for me because i get shitty service at my house. Once they add WiFi texting this will be one of my favorite apps ever...Thoughts?

Texting error from 9230, 2112 error?

Sunday 27th of January 2013 / androidforums.com
I'm getting a "You rced this message because you sent a text to a number without the area code or used an invalid short code msg 2114." text when I send a text to ANYONE in my contacts, it just started about 3 hours ago when I woke up.I've even tried texting though the default program, GoSMS, and a free-texting program called "HeyWire", and I still get the message. (I even tried texting my phone's number through HeyWire, still got the message)Things I have tried: Turning off phone, taking out battery for a few minutes then rebooting.Turning off phone, taking out battery and SD card, putting them back in, rebooting.Erased all of my text conversations.Erased all Dialer & Dialer Storage data.Backed up all of my contacts, then erased them from my phone, then tried texting one of them with just the number (No longer a contact)Tried texting while on 3G/WiFi.None of those worked, and I've tried each multiple times. I"m still able to connect to 3G/WiFi, but for some odd reason I can't connect to the internet with 3G,,,

Wifi calling/texting?

Friday 01st of November 2013 / forums.androidcentral.com
Can anyone confirm whether the Nexus 5 will have wifi calling/texting? I haven't read any solid evidence either way. By the way, I plan on using on Tmobile and buy through google play if that makes a difference. Thanks in advance.

FREE texting over wifi; but keep number

Saturday 11th of January 2014 / androidforums.com
I have used a variety of wifi texting services like Heywire, Textfree, etc. The problem is that I am assigned a new number. I don't have data, so even though I might explain to people to text me on my mobile carrier's number (I get free incoming) so that I can receive it wherever I am, they always end up getting confused and texting my wifi texting number and then wonder why I don't receive it right away (because I might not be connected to wifi when they send it).I need an app that can text over wifi (so I can avoid charges) but uses MY phone number. Even if it doesn't actually use my phone number, I don't care. But as long as it forces the person getting the message to reply back to my mobile carrier number.I tried mysms, as well as ChompSms, etc; but they all charge to send over wifi to users that don't have the app. And What'sApp and others like it forces the end user to also have the app.The fact that there are apps like mysms and ChompSms that send sms messages over wifi with your own phone number to anyone that can receive sms shows that it's possible.Does anyone know of a COM

Google Voice sms messages over wifi?

Friday 31st of January 2014 / androidforums.com
I must have totally misread something. I'm using the L39C Android 4.1.2. I have a Google Voice account and the Voice app on the phone. I thought when I was connected via wifi and used GV for texting that it wasn't supposed to deduct from my Tracfone Texting "bank". Well, I obviously thought wrong because I've been texting today from home connected over my network and my text balance is going down. Can someone please tell me where I went wrong?

how to use wifi for text+calling when you don't have signal?

Thursday 20th of March 2014 / forums.androidcentral.com
I always heard you can do this but I cant figure out how or what app to use. I have good service but in my apartment its really bad and when texting or placing a call I literally have to walk all over my room toggling air plane mode to get a bar to just send a text message! but i do have a great wifi connection, so is it possible to use my wifi connection to send texts/calls when I'm in my apartment? I found a few VOIP/wifi texting apps, but they want you to use THEIR number and THEIR APP to do all the texting/calling and I don't want to do that... Any other option? thanks
