HOW TO: troubleshoot bad battery life with logcat

Thursday 04th of February 2010 / androidforums.com
What is logcat?Logcat is the command to view the internal logs of the Android system. Viewing logs is often the best way to diagnose a problem, and is required for many issues. This way you'll find out what apps are doing in the background without you noticing. How do I install it?1. Make sure you've enabled on USB debugging on your phone in Settings -> Application -> Development2. Get the Android SDK here: Android SDK | Android Developers3. Extract the folder to C:Android (using this path in this example, you can extract it where you would like)4. Download this file: RapidShare: 1-CLICK Web hosting - Easy Filehosting and extract the 'usb_driver' folder to C:Android5. Connect the phone with the USB cable6. Windows will ask for the driversIf you have WinXP follow these steps: USB Driver for Windows | Android DevelopersIf you have Win7 or Vista follow these steps: USB Driver for Windows | Android DevelopersThe folder you need to browse to for the driver is C:Androidusb_driverEverything installed? Continuing...Now how to actually access the log, everything in italic are comma

Android 101: Logcat explained and detailed [from the forums]

Sunday 18th of December 2011 / androidcentral.com
I know most of you guys and gals aren't used to sitting down and reading stack traces or debugging logs (you're better off, trust me), but sometimes during Android hacking and debugging reading the logcat output is a necessary evil. When a developer asks for a log, it's usually followed by a command you don't understand with special characters, and no explanation of what you're doing. That's fine for the busy developer, but every opportunity to learn something should be taken. Android Central member JHuston456 has done an excellent job sorting out the switches and parameters used for the logcat command, and has done a fine job explaining them for normal folks. For anyone who has rooted and plans to hack away at their phone, it's required reading. Hit the forums, have a look, and thank JHuston456 when you're done.Source: Learn logcat like a pro

Using Logcat to Debug Screen

Thursday 12th of April 2012 / androidforums.com
bads3ctor is the only user to have successfully gathered a Logcat dump to give definitive information regarding the "long-press and drag and drop" bug in this phone. Looking further into the issue and doing a little more reading, I don't think we've utilized Logcat to it's full potential and I also don't think the issue has anything to do with a broken digitizer or bad drivers (I suspect it's the way some firmware is compiled with the rom or kernel, ie: inputdispatcher.cpp)Using the "Log" class in ADB can be scary to new users, but is a life line for devs to debug and fix errors, it essentially is Android's built-in bug-finder.To learn a little more about what some of the Logcat "flags/switches" do you can read here: Running Logcat (Advanced way)and hereFlagsA developer at XDA, named Michael Perez, made an app to easily gather Logcat information (with many flags, and also supports kernel logging) specifically tailored to those of us who are not devs or power users. This application is called "LogThis" and can be found at the Play Store here:LogT

ViperRom and logcat

Saturday 09th of August 2014 / androidforums.com
Hi again. Im here this time with trouble flashing the viper rom. I have a few questions from those knowledgable enough. 1) now i know this rom works for the one sv but will it work for the boost variant?2) when it comes to logcat. I think ive got the procedure, but the dev team asked ( in the xda post) for logcats from those having problems. My problem occurs before the rom installs , so would a logcat even show anything usefull? 3) i read that sensetive information can be in the logcat ... Like what?As always thanks in advanceEdit: i also noticed that in the additions directory (inside the zip) there he a directory for the cricket that contains a boot img. and system folder. I replaced them with my own boot img abd everything in the system folder with the boost counterparts ( renaming to maintain the sake file structure) then re zipped. Why wont that work either? (also just fyi , this is just a step i took in trouble shooting , all of the above is seperate from this issue)
