What is sideloading? [Android A to Z]

Thursday 02nd of February 2012 / androidcentral.com
What is sideloading? It's a term you see a lot thrown around while talking about Android applications, and it's simple to explain. It means installing applications without using the official Android Market. What's less simple is how it's done and why you would do it. That's where this post comes in. Let's explain it, shall we?How to do it is easy enough, so let's start there. In the Application settings on your Android phone, you'll find a check box to "Allow installation of non-Market applications." When it's checked, you can sideload. You'll also see a pop-up warning when you check this box letting you know that your phone is now more vulnerable to attacks from applications, and that you accept all the responsibility that comes with doing this. It makes sense -- you can't hold Google responsible for applications you didn't download through their service using their security methods. Sideloading apps is easy to do as well. You download them to your phone, then use a file manager application to find them and "click"

After charging my Motorola Droid last night, I went on it this morning to look through the app market, and within a few minutes, it popped up a message saying my battery was about to die! (it had been fully charged!)....I went to the settings to view the running applications, and something was on there I had never seen before..."VPNServiceBinder" What is that? Should I be worried? Icon in status bar. What is it?

Wednesday 23rd of March 2011 / droidforums.net
What is the icon for that looks like a wheel with arrows pointing away on 3 sides and then beams coming out of it on the right? Im sure it has something to do with gps or something but when gps comes on you get the standar sat looking thing with beams, so what is this? It is always on and im sure its affecting my battery. I do have back groun data enabled however I also have any app set to use background data using its own settings for updating. Any info would be appreciated.

Battery just went crazy! How can I figure out what is causing it to drain so fast?

Saturday 26th of February 2011 / forums.androidcentral.com
Around 2:00 or 3:00 this afternoon I noticed my phone felt a bit hot, but since I had just taken it out of my pocket I didn't give it much thought. I took about a 3 hour nap and when I woke my phone had shut off due to the battery being drained. I believe it was almost full when I started my nap, so that means it drained in about 3 hours while not being used. I charged it back up to about 32% and took it off the charger. In less than 2 hours I was getting the warning to plug it in because the battery was low! When I looked at the battery usage it showed: Android System: 37%Cell standby: 20%Wi-Fi: 20%Phone idle: 13%Display: 10% How can I figure out what is happening with my battery?

What is in it for Big Broadcast

Tuesday 20th of August 2013 / forums.androidcentral.com
Was just wondering why HBO or any other media company would want this to work? Think about it. I go over to Bob's house. He doesn't have HBO. I pull up my HBO Go app and stream Game of Thrones. Just playing devils advocate here. Bob doesn't even have cable. Even though I am paying for cable plus HBO subscription. It just seems like they havent "gotten" it yet, why should Big Broadcast get it this time around. Hoping I am just being negative and they finally come around. HBO may be a bad example.
