What are 5 reasons to root an Android device?

Monday 21st of March 2011 / androidforums.com
I posted this in the All about Root section, but seeing as how that is Handset specific I feel I will get more input by posting this here: So I'm thinking about rooting my Droid 2 and I'm just curious about all of the advantages that there are to rooting. What are 5 good reasons to root a phone? Also, seeing as how rooting a phone voids the warranty, is there a way to restore the phone to factory settings once it has been rooted? I'm a noob about this and I just want to be knowledgeable about it before I go follow through on rooting.

Google Android aPad keyboard help

Wednesday 06th of October 2010 / androidtablets.net
I had to restore my tablet to factory settings because an app I dled made everything force-close. (I can't remember which app either.) Once I did, I re-started it once it was charged up and did almost exactly what I did the first time. I set English as the language (since it was purchased from China and everything wasin chinese) and set the time, date, and time zone, etc. After I set up the WiFi, I typed in on the "Search" bar to onviously do a web search, and the characters were in chinese. I thought, well, maybe it'll correct itself? But when I pushed enter, Chinese sites came up. And no matter what it is, the characters are always in chinese, though the letters on the keyboard are English letters. What the crap do I do?! How Do I "Restore" the Phone to Factory Settings?

Monday 05th of September 2011 / androidforums.com
Hi guys.I bought a Samsung Galaxy S II a while ago and it is a beautiful phone, but I have had some pretty annoying problems, and therefore I would like to "restore" the phone to factory settings.3G never seems to be enabled regardless of how many times I configure the APN.KIES used to work fine but now it always "takes too long to respond" whenever I try to access it via URL.Sometimes the battery dies too fast (but I found a thread for that!).Please keep in mind I'm REALLY new to the world of Android, so I don't know the "lingo" of this nice world yet ("rooting", etc..). I have looked for a way to restore my phone but everything is a bit confusing, particularly because of these "big words". Can someone tell me how can I restore my phone to factory settings? As an additional question, is there a way to see all the apps I have purchased/downloaded from the MarketPlace? Just so I can redownload them again. I don't want to do a full backup of the phone since I don't have much important stuff on it, so I would rather leave it in clean stat

Restore factory settings = lose carrier?

Sunday 25th of September 2011 / androidforums.com
I have locked my gmail account to my phone's Android Market application, meaning I can't log into the Android Market with another account. And I can't delete that account from the phone. I've read a few tutorials and tried those... the ones with the making a new account and trying to log in with that, etc. but it didn't work. Now, the only solution I see is using what the phone suggests: going back to factory settings. But because it's a new phone and it's more of a exchange phone for a month, a Samsung Galaxy S2.. I'm a bit worried about doing the factory reset.I would like to ask, the people that did this, what exactly do you lose when you do a factory reset and especially if you lose your carrier when you go back to factory settings.. The carrier on this phone is Orange. Thanks in advance for any info!

Factory Reset not working as expected

Tuesday 12th of February 2013 / androidforums.com
Hi, I'm confused about what actually happens when you reset your phone to factory settings. I removed the SD card and then did: Settings > Privacy > Factory data reset. When it came back on, it looked mostly like when I first got it except that the 'superuser' app was still installed (I had rooted my phone so I could unlock it). I then experimented by uninstalling a useless looking system app and repeated the factory reset - the app was not restored.I had imagined that a factory reset was a bit like doing a restore on a windows PC - ie completely wipe the primary partition and then, using a backup copy on a hidden partition, restore the PC to the way it was when it came out of the shop. (I think this was the way things worked with my old windows mobile 6 phone).Have I miss-understood what a factory reset is, or is there a 'harder' restore that I should use? What actually happens during a restore? Is there a hidden partition with a backup copy, or does it just delete some files?I'm asking cos I want to understand more about Android, but also I want to mess about with my phone an

New android user looking for veteran help

Sunday 06th of October 2013 / forums.androidcentral.com
Hey, everyone. I just got my first android phone yesterday (Galaxy S4) and tossed my iPhone 4S. Now, I have spent hours upon hours googling info about this phone and I have learned quite a lot. On the plus side, I am tech savy, however, I'd like to ask a few questions that hopefully an android veteran can answer. Also, I am aware of rooting my phone but have no desire to do that at this time as my phone is new and I am already impressed with what it can do (play N64, DS, PS1 emus very niceley, etc.) My first question is: Am I able to save specific apps, files, settings, etc onto my 32gb SD card, remove the SD card and restore my phone to factory default in order to clean up any unwanted files I may have picked up through apps and then put the SD card back in to get the apps I had before back? Kinda like starting with a clean slate but having the files I want, settings, etc I want. second question is: Is there any legit way to remove pre-installed apps or free some ram? Not too sure what ram does but my phone already lost 1.2gb of it to mostly nonsense I assume.

Can't Upgrade my S3 from version 4.1.1 to latest

Saturday 21st of December 2013 / androidforums.com
I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 Lte GT-I9305 & I dont have the update software function or developer settings. I'm on a 2 year contract with Orange/EE (U.K) which ends November 2014. I'm wanting to upgrade my andriod version to the latest one as im still on Android version 4.1.1I know how to access the phone setting to restore to factory settings & custom ROM using Power off/on button, Homescreen button & Volume up/down button. Any ideas how I can update my android version ? I'm not sure how to do custom ROM and dont want to damage my mobile. If anyone knows how I can upgrade my android version or how I can get the software upgrade function to work on my mobile, It would be much appreciated.I have seen the factory restore menu but never actually done a restore and not sure what I would need to do, Ff this was the case. Not sure if restoring my mobile to factory settings would sort anything out. I am missing out on new features due to not having the latest android version.
