Emergency Alert!! scared the crap out of me

Wednesday 19th of December 2012 / forums.androidcentral.com
My phone started an emergency alert with some warning sign(Red triangle) and some text on the screen (I dismissed it).It made loud alert sound with a voice saying "Emergency Alert blah blah blah". This happened 4am in the morning. So you could image me panicking in half sleep. It took me a while to figure out what was going on.At first I thought my phone fried since I had plugged in the phone overnight for charging. after I came to my sense i realized it an emergency alert system. At 4am?? really?? btw, for 2 days we will have bad weather with 5-8 inch snow and storm. I thought that was funny and would share so people wont panic To get to emergency alert settings go to Settings-->More-->cell broadcasts

Wireless SMS Based Emergency Alert System Going Live this Month

Thursday 17th of May 2012 / android.net
All four major cell phone carriers have now signed on to the U.S. federal government's Wireless Emergency Alert system. That new new wireless SMS based emergency alert service is set to go live this month. The new service will cover 97 percent of active mobile users, with a "point-to-multipoint system" that targets at-risk subscribers. The service will include alerts from the National Weather Service, FEMA, FCC and Department of Homeland Security. It works by sending location-based messages of 90 characters or less to nearby handsets in the event of an imminent meteorological or other threat. The mostly opt-out service will also accommodate AMBER and Presidential alerts. Thanks for the tip, Str8Aro!Source: Engadget

Droid Bionic gets a mysterious OS update

Tuesday 20th of December 2011 / androidcentral.com
We love updates. That is, we love updates when we know what they are and what they do. Such is not the case with the Motorola Droid Bionic, which is in the midst of getting an update to system version 5.9.901. Verizon's yet to post a changelog, and the OS version is still Android 2.3.4. Though AC reader Jim does note that there appears to be a new "Emergency Alerts" app, which might or might not be a part of that emergency alert system Verizon accidentally cookied off early a few weeks ago. We've hit up Big Red in hopes of unraveling this one, and we've got more pics after the break. In the meantime, hit the forum link below to see what everyone else is seeing.More: Droid Bionic forums; Thanks, Jim!

Commercial Mobile Alert System (CMAS) disable

Monday 29th of October 2012 / androidforums.com
A friend of mine received this alert on his phone, "This is a test of the Commercial Mobile Alert System. This is only a test". He asked me about it and if I had gotten one. I said no, but later checked and I had sorta (checked my blocking log). It didn't get to annoy me the way it did on his phone even though we booth have GS2 phones. I found my call blocker had caught it as an "Unknown sender" and blocked it. So I looked it up and found out about it.Commercial Mobile Alert System (CMAS) | FCC.govWell if you don't like being annoyed by it, (I for one don't as I have a weather radio and the news is often on at my place) you can disable it. go to your messaging app and hit the menu button choose settings then emergency alerts. Now according to the FCC (and the option is always grayed out on the phone) you can't disable presidential alerts. However, apparently yes you can, with a call/SMS/MMS blocker. I had purchased a blocking app (I use Extreme Call Blocker) due to some business down in Tampa that was using an SMS caster to send out ads for their computer store (t

UK to experiment with mobile emergency alerts

Tuesday 17th of September 2013 / feedproxy.google.com
British government working with O2, Vodafone and EE to test alertsThe UK could join the U.S. with a nationwide mobile emergency alert system if trials of the technology are successful. BBC News reports that trials are to take place inEasingwold, in North Yorkshire, Leiston, in Suffolk, and Glasgow city centre, with up to 50,000 people receiving emergency notifications. Three of the four major mobile networks — O2, EE and Vodafone —are participating in the pilot, the broadcaster reports. Both traditional SMS messages and cell broadcast messages will be tested as part of the trial, which is expected to begin later this month and run through until November. A report in 2014 will then determine whether the system should be implemented nationwide, and if so what form it should take.Countries already using mobile emergency alerts include the U.S., Australia and the Netherlands, and other areas prone to natural disasters are in the process of implementing similar systems. Stateside, emergency alerts have been used to inform the public of events like prison escapes, disappearance
